Formula E and the FIA have revealed the groundbreaking GEN4 race car, set to debut in the 2026/27 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. With 600kW of power, active all-wheel drive, and 100% recyclable construction, the GEN4 marks a new era of innovation, performance, and sustainability in motorsport.
The future of motorsport has arrived. Formula E and the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) have officially unveiled the all-new GEN4 race car, representing a complete reinvention of electric racing. Set to debut in the 2026/27 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, the GEN4 brings unprecedented levels of speed, performance, and sustainability to the sport.
Engineered for both today’s pioneers and tomorrow’s rising stars, the GEN4 becomes the fastest Formula E car in history, redefining what’s possible on the racetrack. The car delivers up to 600kW of power (equivalent to 815hp) and introduces active all-wheel drive in every phase of the race — a world first for open-wheel electric motorsport.
Formula E describes the GEN4 as “the most challenging car to master,” designed for wheel-to-wheel battles, unpredictable race strategies, and breathtaking overtakes. Every element, from the active differential to regenerative braking and high-efficiency energy systems, demonstrates Formula E’s commitment to pushing the limits of technology and real-world electric innovation.
The GEN4 will undergo testing by registered Formula E manufacturers — Porsche, Nissan, Stellantis, Jaguar, and Lola Cars — as they calibrate their powertrains and software to extract maximum performance before the official launch of Season 13. Each manufacturer will bring its in-house technology and energy management expertise to ensure the GEN4 reaches its full potential.
Design & Performance Highlights
The GEN4’s new chassis features two distinct aerodynamic setups: high downforce for qualifying and low downforce for race conditions, offering unmatched adaptability and speed. Key technical improvements include:
-
450kW race power and 600kW Attack Mode for ultimate overtaking.
-
700kW regenerative braking, recapturing more energy per lap than ever.
-
55kWh race energy capacity, up 43% from GEN3 Evo, allowing bolder race strategies.
-
Active All-Wheel Drive and enhanced traction control, delivering total grip on every corner.
Sustainability at the Core
Beyond raw power, the GEN4 represents the world’s most sustainable race car. Built with 100% recyclable materials and a minimum of 20% recycled content, it sets a new benchmark for environmentally responsible design. From its next-generation battery to innovative tyre compounds and ethically sourced materials, the GEN4 embodies Formula E’s vision for a circular, low-impact motorsport ecosystem.
Voices from Formula E and FIA
Jeff Dodds, CEO of Formula E, stated:
“The GEN4 is far more than a race car. It represents over a decade of progress, innovation, and ambition in electric racing. With GEN4, Formula E strengthens its position as the world’s most forward-thinking sport.”
Marek Nawarecki, FIA’s Senior Circuit Sport Director, added:
“This car once again raises the bar for electric technology in motorsport. Ready to race in Season 13, it marks the dawn of a bright new era for Formula E.”
According to Formula E’s Co-Founder Alberto Longo, the GEN4 is “built for the pioneers of tomorrow,” combining 600kW of power and active all-wheel drive to test drivers like never before.
Vincent Gaillardot, FIA Technical Manager, concluded:
“The GEN4 is the most advanced Formula E single-seater ever, achieving top performance while maintaining full sustainability and cost efficiency.”
As Formula E prepares to enter its next chapter, the GEN4 stands as a symbol of what the future of racing can be — fast, fierce, and fully electric. Fans can expect to see its first competitive laps during Formula E Season 13 (2026/27), with the Jakarta E-Prix 2026 expected to be one of the highlights of its debut season.
